Botulinum toxin BoNT-A recombinant protein
Recombinant Botulinum Toxin Type A (rBoNT-A) is a functional, engineered protein produced in laboratory hosts like E. coli, functionally equivalent to the native toxin. It consists of a 50 kDa light chain (catalytic domain) and a 100 kDa heavy chain (binding/translocation), which cleave SNAP-25 protein to inhibit acetylcholine release, causing temporary muscle paralysis for therapeutic (spasticity) or cosmetic use.
Details
Botulinum toxin (BoNT) is a bacterial exotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum during its growth and reproduction. It is classified into seven types based on different toxin antigens: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.
Recombinant light chain protein of botulinum toxin A was expressed and purified in an E. coli system (as shown in the figure below).
